Multi Purpose Cooperative Societies in Sikkim
 

With a view to provide institutional credits in the villages State Government had organised 35 Multipurpose cooperative Societies all over the State in 1975-76. But these MPCS had largely dependant on consumer business for sustenance (where margin of profit is low) and therefore became sick in absence of cooperative bank. Later with the establishment of State Cooperative Bank in 1997-98 and thereafter declaration of year 2002 as “Co-operative Awareness Year” by the State Government the cooperative became a priority sector. Under the new policy of State Govt. one MPCS is to be organised in each 166 Gram Panchayat units to facilitate sustainable development of  village economy.
